When Christopher and I talked with our captain about staking out Mr. Abruzzi’s pizza shop and keeping a closer eye on the Flannery family, we thought we’d be able to get what we needed in a few weeks.

Oh, how wrong we were.

We’re now going on a month, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Well, there is as long as the Flannerys stay on their schedule.

When Mr. Abruzzi mentioned Wednesdays specifically, I had no clue what we would find. If we only found a bunch of guys going into a restaurant to play poker, there wouldn’t be much we could do about that.

That first Wednesday, we didn’t see anything—just a few guys going in and out after hours. The crew we had watching the Flannerys also reported nothing much going on. I thought this case was going to be over before it even started.

Then came Thursday. That’s when we knew we were here for a reason. And when we realized a few weeks weren’t going to be enough.

Young girls, likely in their teens, were walking in with the nondescript men as Mario Abruzzi watched the door, letting people in and out. The men were coming and going. The girls didn’t leave until morning, looking worse for wear.

I didn’t know what it was. A prostitution ring? Underage pornography? Both? I wasn’t sure. But I knew without a doubt that we needed to break it up—and fast—before more girls were taken advantage of.

The problem was that after that Thursday, we didn’t see them again for another three days. Then we realized the pattern. It’s happening every third night, keeping the days of the week scattered enough to throw off a stench, but often enough to keep the money flowing in for whatever’s going on inside.

“I can’t take another night of watching these girls go in,” Christopher says. This is now the final night of us staking out Abruzzis. Each night is getting harder to stomach now that we have an idea of what’s going on in there. We have enough photographs of their comings and goings to get a warrant; we just want one more night to try to get something new. We want the dagger.

What we really need is someone inside. A mole. I can’t do it this time—not after what I pulled six years ago. How I made it out alive without the Flannerys coming after me is still a mystery. They must’ve known it was me, but they were probably in enough hot water that going after a cop wouldn’t have helped their situation. Even they aren’t that stupid.

But I’m not about to push my luck twice.

“Collin doesn’t know what’s going on in there?”

I shake my head, also frustrated by our lack of knowledge. “Nope. No one is talking. Which has to mean it’s something big.”

That’s been the worst part of it: no one knows what’s going on. Informants, other undercover officers—hell, even the Feds—haven’t heard a peep. Though everyone is in agreement that it’s something big.
